Congressman Bill Flores Discusses This Week in Washington

U.S. Representative Bill Flores issued the following statements regarding H.R. 986, the Protecting Americans with Preexisting Conditions Act, preliminary thoughts on H.R. 5, the Equality Act, and the annual Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce and Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce Washington D.C. Fly-in:

Protecting Americans with Preexisting Conditions Act
“Once again, the House Democrat Majority is forcing a vote on political messaging instead of productive bipartisan legislation that will actually help the American people. The so-called ‘Protecting Americans with Preexisting Conditions Act’ is a gross misrepresentation of the truth that is meant to mislead hardworking American families. Rather than actually protect medically vulnerable individuals, this bill would strip the authority of states to innovate and develop more choice and more affordability in health care. While I am vehemently against the policy language in this bill, I voted present in protest of the political gamesmanship the Democrats employed, including the fraudulent title of the bill. This bill had nothing to do with pre-existing conditions, and the fact remains that Americans with pre-existing conditions are protected under current law. I support preserving these protections and will continue working to ensure that all Americans have access to robust and affordable health care coverage that puts the patient first.”

Equality Act
“Looking ahead to next week, it appears that the House Democrat Majority will continue playing political games as they look to expand federal government overreach and strip our religious freedom protections. The Equality Act is another fraudulently named bill that seeks to gut existing pro-life measures such as the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer dollars from being used to perform abortions. The bill would also explicitly ban claims made under the bipartisan Religious Freedom Restoration Act that protect health care providers who consciously object to participating in medical procedures such as abortion. This is a dangerous bill that threatens the religious freedom of all Americans under the guise of equality.”

“Like all of the other hyper-partisan Democrat messaging bills that have been placed on the House floor for show votes this year, I will not support the deceptively named Equality Act. Charades like these are a waste of legislative energy that could be spent actually helping hardworking Texas families by dealing with the important issues facing our nation such as border security, immigration reform, infrastructure, health care, prescription drug costs, economic security and energy dominance.”

Chamber Fly-In
“One of my favorite events each year is the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce and Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce Washington D.C. fly-in. It is truly an honor to welcome these two outstanding chambers to our nation’s capital. It cannot be stated enough just how vital it is for these business and community leaders to come to Washington and share their visions and federal priorities with key policymakers on Capitol Hill.

“I was pleased to set up a full day of speakers, including our Texas Senators, Congressional leaders and members of President Trump’s administration, to visit with the chambers about their federal priorities and to answer questions. It is always helpful for federal policymakers to hear first-hand from our local job creators, particularly as we work to maximize the growth of our already-booming economy. I look forward to welcoming a similar fly-in with the Austin Chamber of Commerce later this summer. Having these chambers come to Washington is richly beneficial to my fellow Congressional colleagues as we work to represent hardworking Central Texas families.”
