U.S. Representative Bill Flores (R-Texas) issued the following statement regarding the deal to reopen the portions of the federal government that were shut down:

"I am pleased that the partial government shutdown has come to an end and that Nancy Pelosi is finally ready to negotiate on border security over the coming days. I am also grateful for the committed federal employees who continued to work without pay and for the patience of those who were furloughed. Now, Congress is tasked, in short order, with bringing forth a solution to address the security and humanitarian crises along our southern border.  It is my hope that Congressional Democrats will honor their commitment to work in good faith to provide the resources necessary to secure our border.  Looking forward, I further hope that a successful, bipartisan solution on border security will provide Congress with the courage and commitment to develop additional bipartisan actions to deal with other serious immigration issues – beginning with finding solutions for our Dreamer population. I remain committed to working with all parties to advance border security solutions that keep hardworking American families safe and to address our country’s dysfunctional immigration laws."

After careful consideration of the pros and cons of the border security and government funding bill, I elected to support President Trump by voting for the bill. This bill averts another partial government shutdown, provides an important down payment on a physical border barrier to address the security crisis along our southern border (all of which will be built in Texas), gives ICE the resources they need to detain violent criminals, and funds key initiatives to improve border security technology. I cannot and will not ever vote against a national security funding bill when there is not another achievable option to enable the federal government to fulfill its most important Constitutional mission – keeping hardworking American families safe.
