U.S. Representative Bill Flores (R-Texas) issued the following statements regarding votes to pay federal workers affected by the shutdown, Speaker Pelosi canceling the previously agreed upon State of the Union Address and his committee assignments for the 116th Congress:

Paying Federal Workers During Shutdown
"This week, House Republicans once again put forth efforts to provide relief to federal workers affected by the partial government shutdown. I, along with all of my Republican colleagues and a handful of my Democratic colleagues, voted for two separate measures that would pay federal workers while negotiations to open the government continue. Unfortunately, these measures failed as a majority of House Democrats voted to instead pass bills that have no chance of actually ending the shutdown. The result is that federal employees continue to go without pay and the humanitarian and security crisis on our southern border continues.

"President Trump has already shown that he is willing to make offers that appease all sides. His latest proposal advances immigration and border security solutions, including providing certainty for our Dreamer population, and reopens the parts of the federal government that are currently not funded. If House Democrats are really concerned about federal workers, they should come to the negotiating table with President Trump and work to reopen the government and finally address the humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border."

Canceling President Trump’s State of the Union Address
"Speaker Pelosi has reached a new low by canceling the previously scheduled State of the Union Address. This unfortunate action is unprecedented in the history of our country and interferes with the Constitution’s requirement that the president provide a state of the nation for hardworking American families. Her action is a cheap stunt which puts politics ahead of the interests of the American people. As negotiating continues, the president has decided to take the high road and delay the delivery of the State of the Union until after the shutdown ends."

116th Congress Committee Assignments
"For the 116th Congress, I am honored to once again serve on the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee and rejoin the Budget Committee as designee of the Republican Leader, Kevin McCarthy. I look forward to serving on these committees and working to better the lives of Texas families."

After careful consideration of the pros and cons of the border security and government funding bill, I elected to support President Trump by voting for the bill. This bill averts another partial government shutdown, provides an important down payment on a physical border barrier to address the security crisis along our southern border (all of which will be built in Texas), gives ICE the resources they need to detain violent criminals, and funds key initiatives to improve border security technology. I cannot and will not ever vote against a national security funding bill when there is not another achievable option to enable the federal government to fulfill its most important Constitutional mission – keeping hardworking American families safe.
