U.S. Representative Bill Flores (R-Texas) issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s proposal to address immigration challenges and reopen the government:

“As the debate has raged in Washington about border security and the partial government shutdown, I have been encouraging President Trump and Congressional leadership to think big and outside the box in order to break the ongoing political stalemate. Fortunately, President Trump has adopted that ‘go big’ approach in his announcement today. Accordingly, I strongly support today's proposal from President Trump to address the security and humanitarian crisis along our southern border, provide opportunities for Dreamers and to end the partial government shutdown. This proposal directly addresses two of the biggest concerns of hardworking Texas families in the 17th Congressional District – enhancing border security and offering certainty for our Dreamer population. I look forward to working with President Trump as well as my House Democratic and Republican colleagues to advance immigration/border security solutions and to reopen the parts of the federal government that are currently not funded.”

After careful consideration of the pros and cons of the border security and government funding bill, I elected to support President Trump by voting for the bill. This bill averts another partial government shutdown, provides an important down payment on a physical border barrier to address the security crisis along our southern border (all of which will be built in Texas), gives ICE the resources they need to detain violent criminals, and funds key initiatives to improve border security technology. I cannot and will not ever vote against a national security funding bill when there is not another achievable option to enable the federal government to fulfill its most important Constitutional mission – keeping hardworking American families safe.
