U.S. Representative Bill Flores (R-Texas) issued the following statement regarding the December jobs report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics:

“It is great news to see such strong employment statistics to close out 2018. Not only are more Americans finding jobs, but wages continue to grow and those that were previously discouraged are once again benefiting from a thriving job market. The unemployment rate has been at or below four percent for 10 consecutive months, something we have not experienced in nearly 50 years. Our strong labor market is further exemplified in the U-6 unemployment rate, which measures unemployed, underemployed and those who gave up looking for employment. At the current 24 month point of the Trump administration, the U-6 measurement is 55 percent lower than the U-6 at the same 24 month point of the Obama administration – 16.6 percent in December 2010 versus 7.6 percent in December 2018. These statistics further show that the work done during the 115th Congress has in fact spurred economic growth and opportunity. As we begin the 116th Congress, it is my hope that we continue building upon these successes to help hardworking American families flourish and restore America’s promise, prosperity and security.”

After careful consideration of the pros and cons of the border security and government funding bill, I elected to support President Trump by voting for the bill. This bill averts another partial government shutdown, provides an important down payment on a physical border barrier to address the security crisis along our southern border (all of which will be built in Texas), gives ICE the resources they need to detain violent criminals, and funds key initiatives to improve border security technology. I cannot and will not ever vote against a national security funding bill when there is not another achievable option to enable the federal government to fulfill its most important Constitutional mission – keeping hardworking American families safe.
