U.S. Representative Bill Flores (R-Texas) released the following statement regarding the Bureau of Economic Analysis report on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the second quarter of 2018, and the House passage of H.R. 5515, the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019:

2nd Quarter GDP Report
"Today’s report continues to prove that our bold, pro-growth tax reforms and regulatory reforms are fueling strong economic gains for America. It is fulfilling to experience GDP growth in excess of 4 percent, which brings average GDP growth under President Trump to a level that is over 40 percent higher than it was during the slow-growth Obama era. These higher growth statistics validate that our current and on-going policies are having a positive, durable and sustainable economic impact for hardworking Texas families. I remain committed to working with my colleagues to make more pro-growth reforms to our tax code to build upon this momentum and to create more economic opportunities for all Americans."

"Congress has a duty to ensure our military has every resource necessary to fight today’s global threats. The National Defense Authorization Act is essential to providing our military with the critical resources and authority they need to keep America safe at home and abroad. This bipartisan bill increases funding to rebuild our military, strengthens military training and readiness, makes critical investments in defense systems, and boosts national security research and development. Additionally, it gives our troops a well-deserved pay raise, the largest they have seen in nine years. It is incumbent on Congress to continue working to strengthen our national defense and support our military men and women who are committed to protecting this great nation."

After careful consideration of the pros and cons of the border security and government funding bill, I elected to support President Trump by voting for the bill. This bill averts another partial government shutdown, provides an important down payment on a physical border barrier to address the security crisis along our southern border (all of which will be built in Texas), gives ICE the resources they need to detain violent criminals, and funds key initiatives to improve border security technology. I cannot and will not ever vote against a national security funding bill when there is not another achievable option to enable the federal government to fulfill its most important Constitutional mission – keeping hardworking American families safe.
