Protecting the Sanctity of Life

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 36, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. Congressman Bill Flores (R-Texas) issued the following statement regarding passage of the bill:

“America’s Declaration of Independence states that all persons are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights, including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. For too long, America’s outdated laws have failed to protect those rights for unborn children. Today, the House of Representatives took a strong stand to reaffirm and protect those rights by passing the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.

"Scientific studies have shown that at 20 weeks an unborn child can feel pain. With the House passage of this important legislation, we are giving protections to vulnerable unborn children who are unable speak for themselves; this bipartisan bill speaks on their behalf by protecting their right to life. Now that we have an administration that is committed to protecting the sanctity of life, I am optimistic that we can finally see this common sense, pro-life legislation signed into law. I urge the Senate to follow the lead of the House and take this important moral stand to protect the lives of the unborn."

After careful consideration of the pros and cons of the border security and government funding bill, I elected to support President Trump by voting for the bill. This bill averts another partial government shutdown, provides an important down payment on a physical border barrier to address the security crisis along our southern border (all of which will be built in Texas), gives ICE the resources they need to detain violent criminals, and funds key initiatives to improve border security technology. I cannot and will not ever vote against a national security funding bill when there is not another achievable option to enable the federal government to fulfill its most important Constitutional mission – keeping hardworking American families safe.
