This week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 3219, the Make America Secure Appropriations Act, H.R. 3218, the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Education Assistance Act and S.114, which authorizes appropriations for the Veterans Choice Program. Congressman Bill Flores (R-Texas) issued the following statement regarding passage of these bills:

Make America Secure Appropriations Act
“The most essential constitutional function of our federal government is to provide for the common defense of our country. The bipartisan Make America Secure Appropriations Act provides funding for our national security and border security, delivers a much needed pay raise for our troops, and includes the necessary resources to support our veterans and ensure greater oversight and accountability at the VA. It also includes important provisions to enhance energy research to further advance a 21st century energy strategy and reduce geopolitical instability around the world. Ultimately, this bill will provide the critical resources necessary to keep hardworking American families safe at home and abroad.”

Veterans Bills
“Our military men and women make many sacrifices on behalf of our nation. Upon completion of their service, it is important that they are prepared for a meaningful and successful civilian life. The Harry W. Colmery Veterans Education Assistance Act updates GI Bill benefits for a 21st century economy by strengthening the opportunities available to veterans and their families.By extending the Veterans Choice Program, we make certain that our veterans continue to receive the medical care they deserve while Congress continues its work to create a 21st century VA. Last month, President Trump signed into law legislation that brings more accountability to the VA. In passing these bills, we are building on that work to further ensure that our veterans and their families are receiving the care and benefits they have earned.”

It was a busy week in the House. We passed the Intelligence Authorization Act and the Unfunded Mandates Information and Transparency Act, and the Energy and Commerce Committee passed my bipartisan bill – the Advanced Nuclear Fuel Availability Act.
