This week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2810, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2018, and three bills to combat human trafficking. Congressman Bill Flores (R-Texas) issued the following statements regarding passage of these bills.

“The National Defense Authorization Act provides our military with the critical resources and the authority they need to fight and defeat the global threats that exist today. This bipartisan bill gives our troops a much deserved pay raise, the largest they have seen in eight years. It also responsibly increases the strength and funding of our military to meet the needs of the 21st century. This bill reaffirms and provides support for our allies in Europe, the Middle East and East Asia as they face growing threats abroad. Furthermore, it continues modernization reforms at the Pentagon by streamlining the bureaucracy, encouraging financial accountability and increasing efficiencies through competition. It is incumbent on Congress to continue working to strengthen our national defense and support our military men and women who are committed to protecting our great nation.

“It is fulfilling to work with my fellow conservative colleagues and President Trump to make America safe again.”

Combating Human Trafficking
“Human trafficking is a growing epidemic that impacts every region of our country. This form of modern-day slavery is a scourge on our society and must be stopped. With the unanimous passage of these three bills, we empower law enforcement, enhance detection and bolster protections to fight human trafficking, as well as strengthen penalties against traffickers. I, along with my fellow House colleagues, remain committed to combating human trafficking and working to keep our communities safe. It is imperative that we continue to stand strong against this great injustice.”

The bills passed to combat human trafficking include:

  • H.R. 2200 - Frederick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention and Protection Reauthorization Act
  • H.R. 2480 - Empowering Law Enforcement to Fight Sex Trafficking Demand Act
  • H.R. 2664 - Enhancing Detection of Human Trafficking Act
