U.S. Representative Bill Flores (R-Texas) issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement:

“I commend President Trump’s leadership and commitment to withdrawing the United States from the Paris climate agreement. This Obama-era agreement, which was executed without the required Constitutional ratification by the Senate, is a costly and ineffective approach to deal with climate change. This flawed agreement failed to recognize the significant improvement in the environment and emissions reductions already achieved by the United States and the solid trend of expected improvements from our scientific and free market forces. The agreement would also have driven up energy prices for low and middle income families, stifled our economy and slowed job growth for hard working American families.

“While most of us agree that climate change is occurring, there are better solutions than entering into an agreement that allows foreign governments to make decisions for our nation and which would have allowed other nations to cheat at the expense of our economy. I believe that we can address this challenge by having the federal government focus on basic research in the areas of energy storage in order to make renewable power dependable, on advanced nuclear power solutions to produce zero-emissions electricity and on finding ways to reduce emissions from today's conventional fuel sources.  Such activities will more effectively allow us to both lower emissions and grow our economy.”
