U.S. Rep. Bill Flores said Wednesday that his office has gotten "dozens" of calls from constituents demanding the impeachment of President Trump or an independent special prosecutor to oversee the Russia investigation, as well as "dozens" of calls from constituents offering support for the president -- though "not as many as people calling for impeachment," he said.

On Wednesday, the Justice Department announced former FBI Director Robert Mueller would serve as special counsel to oversee a federal investigation into potential coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign during the 2016 election

The 17th District U.S. congressman called into The Eagle on Wednesday evening to weigh in on the latest news from the White House during a particularly dramatic week in Washington, D.C.

Flores said he doesn't "worry about the president's ability to safeguard classified information" after the Washington Post reported Trump had disclosed classified intelligence to the Russian foreign minister and the Russian ambassador to the U.S. during a recent White House meeting. Flores said there are three components to intelligence: actual data, sources and methods.

"The president has broad authority to declassify, on his own, the data," Flores said, adding that "the sources and methods are what you need to be concerned about."

Flores said he can't yet comment on a New York Times report about a memo written by former FBI Director James Comey stating that Trump asked him to stop investigating former National Security Adviser Gen. Michael Flynn. "I need to see the memo," Flores said. "I don't want to comment on hypotheticals."

Flores rejected the idea that the scandals could wreck the congressional agenda

"Our agenda is on track," he said. "The only thing that's different is I get a lot of questions about what's going on at the White House."
