Flores Votes to Keep Government Open, Cut Spending and Fund the Military
House and Senate Come to Bipartisan Agreement on Largest Spending Cut in American History
House and Senate Come to Bipartisan Agreement on Largest Spending Cut in American History U.S. Congressman Bill Flores (R-Texas) voted today for a short-term continuing resolution to avert a government shutdown, cut spending and continue to fund the military. The short-term bridge bill will continue to cut spending while allowing time to finish documenting the spending agreement between Congress and the President that will include $38.5 billion in spending cuts for the remainder of fiscal year 2011 and resolves important policy riders. Flores released the following statement today regarding his vote to cut spending and keep the government open: “I supported the agreement that both houses came to last night to ensure that our military men and women continue to receive their pay, to avoid a government shutdown and to cut spending for the remainder of the fiscal year. Now we can finally move past cleaning up the budget mess left to us by the last Congress and move forward to restore fiscal sanity in Washington. The bipartisan agreement reached late last night will implement the largest spending cut in American history so that we may work to restore certainty to our economy and create a better environment for private sector job growth. “The American people sent a message to Washington last November, and that message was heard loud and clear: grow the economy and cut spending. I came to Washington specifically for this cause. Not only did House Republicans successfully negotiate $39 billion in federal spending cuts for the rest of this fiscal year, but the agreement forces the Senate to act on certain policy riders such as de-funding Planned Parenthood, takes us one step closer to the repeal of ObamaCare and begins to reverse the ‘stimulus’ spending binge, signaling the official end of a period of unprecedented government intervention. Now we can focus on our responsible budget plan for fiscal year 2012, which cuts trillions more in government spending, offers a long-term blueprint for American job creation and sets this country onto the path to prosperity.” To watch the video, click here. Excerpts: “I personally wish it hadn’t gone this far because I didn’t like the fact that our troops were at risk for not receiving their pay. But that said, we got it done. It takes the lack of work from the last Congress off the table, and it moves us forward so that we can start working on the 2012 budget. Because that’s what Americans sent us here to do: to begin to map out a road to the future so that we have a path to prosperity.” “Americans sent us to Washington in November of last year with a clear message and that is: start growing private sector jobs, grow the economy, and get the government spending down so it will be out of our business.” Rep. Bill Flores (R-Texas) represents the 17th Congressional District of Texas and serves on the House Budget Committee. ### |
