U.S. Congressman Bill Flores (R-TX) released the following statement tonight regarding President Obama’s State of the Union Address:
“The message the American people received from President Obama the past two years is that more spending and higher taxes are the only way to grow our economy and create jobs – yet our country still suffers through historic unemployment and the highest debt in U.S. history.
“Tonight, President Obama made the case for billions of dollars in new ‘investment’; however, the last thing our country needs is more of the same failed ‘stimulus’ spending. The evidence is clear: Washington’s spending binge is hampering job creation and piling mountains of debt onto our children and grandchildren. A larger more intrusive government leads to a weaker and less innovative economy. It’s time to push Washington out of the way so the private sector can thrive again.
“President Obama and the Democrats must work with us to end the job-destroying spending spree right now. This starts with meaningful spending cuts, such as those outlined in the Spending Reduction Act, a bill introduced by the RSC that provides taxpayers with $2.5 trillion in cuts over 10 years.
“Republicans in Congress are already meeting their pledge to cut spending – starting with cutting Congress’ own spending first and immediately reducing the legislative budget by 5 percent. Today, House Republicans voted to drop non-security spending down to pre-stimulus, pre-bailout 2008 levels for the rest of this current fiscal year.
“Last year, not only did the spending spree continue unchecked, but in an unprecedented failure, Washington Democrats irresponsibly chose not to pass, or even propose a budget. In the 112th Congress, we will do better. And that starts with cutting spending and reforming the budget process itself so that we may have the opportunity to restore America’s promise, prosperity and security for our children and grandchildren.
“These tough, yet fiscally responsible decisions will prevent future generations from inheriting a stagnant economy and a mountain of debt and help us to preserve America’s standing as the greatest nation in history.”
